Isotonic drinks: popular thirst quenchers in sport

During intensive training sessions and exhausting sports matches, isotonic sports drinks ensure that the body is optimally supplied with energy, fluids, salt and electrolytes. As a result, they have a positive influence on performance and muscle function during sport. The Swiss Sports Nutrition Society defines an isotonic drink as a drink whose osmolarity is similar to that of blood. This means that the concentration of electrolytes and other particles (e.g., glucose) corresponds to that of human blood, which favours particularly rapid absorption in the gut.

Isotonic sports drinks: the benefits and how to use them

Nowadays it is scientifically proven that the intake of drinks containing carbohydrates and electrolytes during physical activity lasting 45-60 minutes can improve performance. Isotonic drinks have the advantage over other conventional drinks (fruit juices, spritzers, water) that they are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream during exercise. Moreover, they offer great benefits for hydration during endurance exercise and hardly cause any gastrointestinal problems. In comparison, hypotonic drinks (such as our COMPETITION® sports drink) have a lower osmotic concentration than our blood, which is why they are absorbed even faster and are ideal for compensating for fluid loss during endurance sports and supplying the body with carbohydrates and minerals.

ISOTONIC: sports drink with carbohydrates and electrolytes

ISOTONIC from SPONSER® is an isotonic thirst quencher with fruity flavours for before, during and after sports to support performance and recovery. Thanks to its broad carbohydrate spectrum (multi-carb formula) and good digestibility, ISOTONIC is used successfully in leisure and endurance sports as well as in team and ball sports. The powder contains the five electrolytes sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium and chloride, which are lost while sweating. Calcium plays an important role in energy metabolism and, together with magnesium and potassium, supports muscle function in athletes. ISOTONIC is free from lactose and gluten and is available in five delicious flavours.

FAQs about sodium and other minerals in isotonic drinks

In order to optimally support the body during training and physical activity, athletes should not only drink pure water, mineral water, fruit juice or spritzers. Sports drinks are effective if they contain carbohydrates, minerals and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride.
Sodium (Na+) is an electrolyte that is crucial for fluid balance and muscle contraction. The body needs a regular supply of sodium to efficiently support compensation of fluid losses caused by sweating and/or hot temperatures. Potassium (K+) supports muscle and nerve function in the human metabolism, it helps to regulate the fluid balance and is important for the carbohydrate metabolism.
What are magnesium, calcium and chloride used for in sports drinks? Magnesium (Mg2+) is essential for energy production, nervous stimulus and, in particular, muscle relaxation. Calcium (Ca2+) is used for healthy bones and muscle contraction. Chloride (Cl-) maintains the osmotic balance.
Sodium is a chemical element with the symbol Na. It occurs naturally in many ingredients or is added as table salt to processed foods. Salt refers to the crystalline chemical compound sodium chloride (NaCl). It consists of positively charged sodium cations (Na+) and negatively charged chloride anions (Cl-). What we commonly refer to as salt or cooking salt is actually sodium chloride.
With regard to the ideal amount of fluid to drink during sporting activity, the current opinion is that in cool temperatures and at low intensities you should drink according to your feeling of thirst. Drinks should preferably contain both fluid and sodium as well as, ideally, other electrolytes. Long-distance races in extreme heat or cold require a drinking concept to prevent dehydration and a loss of performance. Our free online tool called Sports Drink Advisor helps you identify the most suitable drink. The Swiss Sports Nutrition Society also offers a hydration calculator to help you determine your fluid requirements.
To replenish glycogen stores before exercise, we recommend the high-energy sports drink CARBO LOADER with Vitargo, a waxy maize starch hydrolysate specially developed for this purpose. CARBO FUEL is also a good choice. The drink was designed for maximum carbohydrate intake (up to 120 g per hour) and optimum fluid intake during prolonged exercise and competitions. The carbohydrate sources glucose and fructose in a ratio of 1 to 0.8 ensure that the energy supplied is optimally absorbed and metabolised at such high concentrations. The absence of acid and flavour promises the best digestibility; perfect for anyone who struggles with gastrointestinal problems during long-distance activities.
